Berthoud Launches Initiative for International Dark Sky Place Certification

Berthoud, Colorado (February 27, 2025): The Town of Berthoud is forming a Steering Committee to achieve certification as an International Dark Sky Place Community. This initiative is part of our commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.

The Steering Committee will play a pivotal role in addressing light pollution, which affects our ability to enjoy the beauty of the night sky and impacts local wildlife and ecosystems. These volunteers will assist the Town in conducting a lighting inventory of the Town's owned or leased lights and lighting, and measure and document the Town's sky quality. Secondly, they will organize and participate in the Town's dark sky outreach and education events. Third, the Steering Committee will advocate for the Town's dark sky certification's success, sustainability, and continuity.

We invite residents with a passion for sustainability, community advocacy, and stargazing to lend their unique voices and expertise. "This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a project that will have a lasting impact on Berthoud and the environment," says Brian Dubois, Economic Sustainability Manager for the Town of Berthoud. "It's exciting that this group will have the power to make large positive changes quickly.

Interested individuals are encouraged to join in this initiative. Together, we can make a difference and ensure everyone can enjoy the night sky.  For more information or to sign up to join the Steering Committee or add your name to a general volunteer list, please visit Berthoud.org/DarkSky.
