Berthoud Area Transportation System (BATS)

In-Town Trips

• Daily 8 am to 4 pm

Out-of-Town Trips

• Monday 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM to Longmont
• Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM to Loveland
• Thursday 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM to Loveland

Riders must be ready 5 minutes before the scheduled pick-up time. On the morning trips to Longmont and Loveland, riders must be ready no later than 11:30 am to return to Berthoud.

BATS does not run on any holidays observed by Town Hall.

• Riders should call before 4:00 PM the business day before the ride is needed. A trip request will be confirmed by 5:00 PM.
• All trip requests must be called into the office at 970-532-3049. Multiple trip stops may not be accommodated; the driver or dispatcher will determine if time allows for all requested stops.

Riders must live within the BATS service area: 

• State Highway 287 on the north and west, County Road 4E on the south, and County Line Road to the east.

Rides are prioritized in the following order:

1. Medical 
2. Employment 
3. Education 
4. All Others 

Buses are equipped to carry 11 passengers including one ADA wheelchair accessible space.  Drivers will secure wheelchairs and walkers for riders on the bus.  Some equipment may require folding prior to departure. 

Fares

Riders age 60 and over:

• No fare required - donations are appreciated 

Riders age 59 and younger:

• In-town trips -  $1 for a one-way trip
• Out-of-town trips -  $4 for a one-way trip ($8 round trip)

Your generous contributions help provide valuable services to seniors and others in our community who do not have access to transportation.  Donations may be made while on the bus using the available donation envelopes.  Donations can also be mailed to:

Bus Behavior

• Everyone riding the bus must obey the driver's instructions.
• All passengers must be seated and have their seat belts fastened while the bus is moving.
• The noise level must be reasonable. The driver will determine the acceptable noise level.
• Behavior that distracts the driver or interferes with his ability to drive will not be tolerated. This includes abusive or discourteous language, throwing of objects, tampering with the emergency window or any emergency equipment or any disruption among the riders.
• Any damage or defacing of the bus will result in the rider being denied service and compensation must be paid to the Berthoud Area Transportation System (BATS) to repair the damage.

Items Allowed & Not Allowed on the Bus

• Any item that may be a hazard is not allowed on the bus, such as knives, matches, gasoline, and glass containers.
• Large items brought on the bus cannot block the aisle or be higher than the seat and obstruct the driver's view of the riders. Please limit the number of shopping bags. Drivers will help carry groceries and packages to your door, but not into your home. BATS will not transport furniture or items too heavy for drivers to lift or carry.
• No smoking or eating on BATS buses.
• Bottled water is allowed on buses.
• The driver can determine what is and is not allowed on the bus.

Other Issues

• If your medical appointment is running late, please call or have doctor's office call BATS to inform how late you will be, so the driver can pick up other passengers first. Reminder, you must be done by 11:30 am to return to Berthoud.
• If a rider has more than three no-shows in 30 days, the rider can be suspended for a week. If rider continues to no-show they can be suspended up to 30 days or lose access to transportation services provided by BATS. If the rider is late due to doctor's appointment this is not considered a now show.
• All of BATS vehicles are wheelchair equipped. Wheelchairs must be secured at all times with the vehicle's restraint system.
• Service animals may accompany riders on board bus. The driver may ask if the animal is a service animal and what the service animal is trained to do. The rider must keep control of service animals at all times. Service animals cannot roam free on the bus or bother other passengers.
• Companion or Comfort animals are allowed if in a carrier and being transported for veterinary care or to a kennel.

Right to Refuse Service

BATS reserves the right to refuse transportation to individuals whose actions are:

• Violent
• Seriously disruptive so as to pose a safety threat to themselves or others
• Illegal

The driver will stop at a safe location and ask the passenger to leave the bus, and if necessary will call the police. A first offense will result in a written warning; second offense will result in termination of access to transportation services provided by BATS. Passengers who are abusive to passengers or the driver will be subject to immediate and permanent suspension and possible criminal charges.

The Berthoud Area Transportation System (BATS) is committed to ensuring that no person is excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination in the receipt of its services on the basis of race, color, or national origin, or any other characteristics protected by law, including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended. Further, under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, no entity shall discriminate against an individual with a physical or mental disability in connection with the provision of transportation service.

Rider Feedback

The Town of Berthoud values rider input and encourages comments, concerns, and suggestions for improvement. At least once a year regular riders receive a short survey from Larimer County. We encourage you to complete these, but it is not required. They can be returned to a driver, or mailed in. We always welcome your feedback.
