Stormwater Compliance Program
Water in our storm drains flows untreated into our waterways. The purpose of the storm water program is to prevent urban pollutants from reaching our rivers and streams.
The Town of Berthoud cares about protecting our environment and waterways and is also committed to preserving, enhancing and improving the water quality in our rivers, streams, and reservoirs.
In March, 2003, the Town of Berthoud adopted a Stormwater Quality Management Plan in compliance with the Phase 2 requirements of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulation. The goal of the Plan is to protect stormwater quality by controlling and/or eliminating pollutant discharges into stormwater sewer systems.
The regulation requires Berthoud to administer a group of programs to assure water quality is maintained. It also requires any individual or entity, planning construction activities that involve disturbance of one acre or greater, to design and implement erosion control and water quality measures into such activities and obtain a stormwater permit from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).
The Town of Berthoud cares about our waterways and as a resident we are sure that you care, too. Stormwater drains untreated into our watersheds that are inhabited by many animals and aquatic plants.
What a Resident Can Do To Protect Water Quality
As a resident you can help by:
- Cleaning up after your pet.
- Washing your vehicle at a commercial car wash that treats or recycles its wastewater, or wash your car on your yard so the water soaks into the ground.
- Repairing automotive leaks and disposing of used auto fluids.
- Using pesticides and fertilizers sparingly, or not at all.
- Monitor your lawn watering requirements and don't over water.
- Sending nothing to the storm drain but rain!
- Remember To Keep It Clean 'cause we're all Downstream'
