Discoloration May Appear in Tap Water; Water Safe to Drink
This afternoon, the Town of Berthoud added a pump station to the water distribution system north of town including Hammond, Prairie Star and Herron Point, which will likely stir up iron sediment in some customers’ taps. The tap water is safe to drink and the sediment should clear relatively quickly after running water through the faucet.
To clear the sediment from taps, run the faucet until the water changes from brown to clear. Whether 10 minutes, 20 minutes, or longer, continue to run the faucet until there is no visible sediment.
Despite preventative flushing prior to putting the pump station online, this occurrence is very common in water systems when water changes directions or flow rates are increased, both of which happened this afternoon. Additional activities that can also cause iron sedimentation are also currently underway in the area including fire department testing of hydrants and construction water use on hydrants.
